NEW HOPE FOR PATIENTS WITH BRAIN TUMORS

Major improvements and possible cure of some Grade 3 Astrocytoma (Gioblastoma Grade 3) in patients are illustrated in this website.  To view the pictures of CT scans and MRI’S before and after treatment, please CLICK HERE to view Gliomas … individual patients in html format.

A consistent shrinkage of tumors was observed in 70% of 200 patients.

Malignant brain tumors (gliomas) can rarely  be cured by surgery and/or  radiotherapy alone.  Chemotherapy, as generally available, has been of limited value.

Dr. Isaac Djerassi has perfected a form of intensive chemotherapy which is proving to be the most effective treatment of brain gliomas.  Among 200 patients with brain glioma, treated by this method, 70% have shown substantial reduction or disappearance of their tumors, with marked improvement of their symptoms, and prolonged survival.  Eighteen of 57 (31%) patients with advanced and terminal Grade 3 or near Grade 3 Gioblastoma were alive at 10 to 38 years later.  Four of the 18 long-term survivors received chemotherapy alone with no radiation therapy at all.  Higher success rates are expected in recently diagnosed and previously untreated patients in good general condition.  These results were reported to the profession in various publications.  (See References in Clinical Data)

A survival benefit is shown in the graph below which presents the survival in Astrocytomas (Gioblastoma Grade 3) as compared with standard treatment.  Almost 30% of 57 patients with Gliomas Grade 2 ½ and 3 survived over ten years. In his previous work Dr. Djerassi has found that the same chemotherapy, used at different intensities, was most successful in a wide range of different tumors.   The objective results in a variety of tumors are listed below and can be seen on the following document (CLICK HERE to download a zipped Adobe Acrobat file)  or by clicking on any of the following:

Dr. Djerassi’s Treatment of Other Cancers

Most remarkable results with Dr. Djerassi’s High Dose Methotrexate chemotherapy  have been obtained by him and by others in the following types of cancer

Lung cancer - highest response rate and survival

Ovarian cancer - potentially curative

Mesothelioma (asbestos cancer) - highest response and survival

Stomach (gastric) and bladder cancers and sarcomas - potentially curative neo or adjuvant

Breast cancer - highest response and survival.  Curative as adjuvant or long-term treatment
